With the federal election now behind us, we hope for a quick return to a renewed focus on business and how Canada might emerge from the pandemic stronger than ever. At this time, we don’t anticipate any major changes for our sector, but we are confident that procurement opportunities will increase and that more emphasis will be placed on building ships in Canada. We have a tremendous amount of innovation and know-how in our yards and supply chains, and our Association continues to advocate on your behalf.

Our Member Spotlight this edition features naval design and marine engineering firm, Serco Canada Marine, in an interview with Senior Naval Architect, Mrinmayee Thombre. Serco Canada Marine is an excellent example of a firm that draws on experience gained from advanced shipbuilding projects around the world and helps build up this capacity in Canada, for both domestic and export naval projects. Serco’s collaborative and flexible approaches to work have allowed skilled and talented young women like Mrinmayee to thrive and make a difference in how ships are built, particularly those that require the “human factors” to accommodate a more diverse set of people on board.

Serco Canada Marine is a thriving and growing naval design and marine engineering firm helping to build up a robust shipbuilding design and engineering capacity in Canada, supporting the National Shipbuilding Strategy, as well as exporting its expertise to other countries. With extensive experience from teams working on naval projects around the world as well as dynamic new local talent, Serco Canada Marine is a very high caliber, advanced “boutique” firm which has a unique position in Canada. As Senior Naval Architect Mrinmayee Thombre describes, the specialised skillsets and experiences that are brought to projects have given Canadian clients experience gained from some of the most advanced vessels in the world. The Serco team work on projects abroad as well as in Canada and bring a great deal of international technical experience to collaborate with partners here such as with Davie Shipyards on polar icebreakers.

Serco Canada Marine has teams based in Ottawa and on both coasts and is definitely punching above its weight with what the teams achieve for their customers. In house, Serco offers exciting new career opportunities, as Mrinmayee explains. She wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps in the Indian Navy, but when she wanted to join women were still not permitted to serve on-board in India. However, her father and one of his directors provided her with mentorship and encouraged her to pursue training and education as a naval architect. This has led to positions in the United Kingdom, India and Canada in a sector that is now opening up more and more for women. Not only are shore-based jobs hiring more women, but increasingly navies are also changing requirements so that a more diverse set of people can now serve on board. As a naval architect, Mrinmayee is an active part of this change.

Mrinmayee credits Serco with giving her the flexibility and support to have a family and still continue to produce results on her projects. It has been very rewarding and exciting for her to see the work she has done on stability, weights and structures come to life on vessels like the Royal Canadian Navy’s Joint Support Ships. She has seen how her work has directly impacted how these ships were built. Also beneficial has been the ability to network with other member organizations and industry partners through the Canadian Marine Industries and Shipbuilding Association, their excellent market analyses, discussions, workshops, and a chance for representation at the provincial and federal levels, and Mrinmayee is pleased to be part of an organization that brings the sector closer for collaboration.

Great Lakes maritime stakeholders are delighted over a surprise decision taken earlier this week in Washington: the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved $1 billion for U.S. Coast Guard shore side infrastructure nationwide and $350 million in funding for a second heavy Great Lakes icebreaker as part of its budget reconciliation bill.

The U.S., the U.K. and Australia unveiled late Wednesday a trilateral security pact for the Indo-Pacific, nicknamed AUKUS, widely seen as a joint attempt to counter China’s growing influence in the region, notably in the South China Sea.

Classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has granted approval in principle (AiP) to Vard Marine for its next-generation offshore patrol vessel (NGOPV) design.

WASHINGTON ― A public-private partnership focused on accelerating technological breakthroughs for energetics has released its first requirements document, focused on hypersonic weapons and other munitions.

With global powers moving towards developing extra-large uncrewed underwater vehicles, which essentially are submarine-sized underwater drones, it is high time European submarine builders put their heads together collaborate and leap ahead in this highly important area of naval development so that it is not left behind.
