It was very gratifying to me to see first hand the energy and bustle in our marine sector, and to renew old friendships and make new connections. CMISA is your association, and it was great to meet so many of you and hear how we have helped connect our industry during the long and isolating global pandemic. I had the pleasure of visiting the Ocean Group facilities in Quebec City while returning from DefSec and toured their offices, tugs and their 4000 ton floating dry dock. We are revisiting the spotlight we did on Ocean and their Director of Business Development, Construction and Naval Repairs Renée Dumas from last spring. With all the news coming out of that team recently, they deserve another look! Ocean Group is more than a shipyard: where there is water, you’ll likely see Ocean Group in some form or another! Offering integrated marine services ranging from shipbuilding, repair, barge and workboat rental, dredging, towing, salvage and oversized marine transportation, the company really does it all. Ocean Group has transformed itself quickly from a yard that specialized in towing to one that supports a wide variety of clients with a host of marine services, particularly for small and medium-sized vessels. A key driver for the company is quality. As Director of Business Development, Construction and Naval Repairs Renée Dumas explains, Ocean Group maintains and services the vessels it constructs, therefore it’s in the company’s best interests to build to high quality standards “as we have to deal with it.”

Like many insiders in the marine industry, Dumas comes to her work naturally with a family background in fishing in coastal Labrador. She always knew she wanted to be involved in the marine industry. Ocean Group may have almost 1,000 employees, but with a horizontal management structure that fosters team work based on projects, Dumas describes the work atmosphere as “like a family, where you can count on everyone.” The varied nature of the work means that every week is different, and with an ambitious and passionate team, growth is a top priority. Ocean Group is now expanding its successful business model to other parts of the world.

In a sector dominated by men, Dumas is optimistic of what women can bring to the table in this fast-paced, constantly changing environment, and she feels fortunate to work for a woman who has spent 31 years at the company and can provide vital mentorship to her. “It’s a great career, and we need more women to handle all these men, and to bring our multi-tasking skills to the sector!” She is also cognizant of the need to align Ocean Group with the other shipyards and marine industries in Canada, and counts on the advocacy support the Canadian Marine Industries and Shipbuilding Association gives, to be able to speak to governments about challenges and solutions as one unified voice.

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has submitted plans to the industry’s UN regulator, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), detailing urgent measures which governments must take to help the industry achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. 

Abu Dhabi, UAE – A rapid replacement of fossil fuels with renewable fuels based on green hydrogen and advanced biofuels could enable to cut up to 80% of CO2 emissions attributed to international maritime shipping by mid-century, a new report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) finds.

HMCS Harry DeWolf — the first Canadian naval ship to cross the Northwest Passage since the HMCS Labrador in 1954 — sailed to CFB Esquimalt on Monday for maintenance.

Canadian naval architect and marine engineering firm, Robert Allan Ltd. has brought the offshore wind industry closer to eliminating carbon emissions from the supply chain, with the development of a methanol-fuelled crew transfer vessel.
