 Welcome to the first May edition of On Watch, and we hope that all is well with our subscribers across the country and internationally during these challenging times. Perhaps our electronic newsletter will help brighten your inbox with news from our industry. This edition features our member, Ocean Group, with an interview with Director of Business Development, Renée Dumas, continuing our focus on women in our sector. I am very pleased to say that even though women only make up about 10% of the marine sector workforce, we have no shortage of innovative and successful women to feature in our Member Spotlights. The modern marine sector in Canada benefits from the skill, experience, traditions and passion from such a wide variety of people.

| Member Spotlight: Ocean Group |

Ocean Group is more than a shipyard: where there is water, you’ll likely see Ocean Group in some form or another! Offering integrated marine services ranging from shipbuilding, repair, barge and workboat rental, dredging, towing, salvage and oversized marine transportation, the company really does it all. Ocean Group has transformed itself quickly from a yard that specialized in towing to one that supports a wide variety of clients with a host of marine services, particularly for small and medium-sized vessels. A key driver for the company is quality. As Director of Business Development, Construction and Naval Repairs Renée Dumas explains, Ocean Group maintains and services the vessels it constructs, therefore it’s in the company’s best interests to build to high quality standards “as we have to deal with it in the future.”
Like many insiders in the marine industry, Dumas comes to her work naturally with a family background in fishing in coastal Québec/Labrador. She always knew she wanted to be involved in the marine industry. Ocean Group may have almost 1,000 employees, but with a horizontal management structure that fosters team work based on projects, Dumas describes the work atmosphere as “like a family, where you can count on everyone.” The varied nature of the work means that every week is different, and with an ambitious and passionate team, growth is a top priority. Ocean Group is now expanding its successful business model to other parts of the world.
In a sector dominated by men, Dumas is optimistic of what women can bring to the table in this fast-paced, constantly changing environment, and she feels fortunate to work for a woman who has spent 31 years at the company and can provide vital mentorship to her. “It’s a great career, and we need more women to bring a wind of change, with a feminine touch to this industry!” She is also cognizant of the need to align Ocean Group with the other shipyards and marine industries in Canada, and counts on the advocacy support the Canadian Marine Industries and Shipbuilding Association gives, to be able to speak to governments about challenges and solutions as one unified voice.

It has been a long time since the marine industry in Canada has been so robust and vibrant. Naturally, there is room for improvement, but it is still safe to say that things are busy and going in the right direction. This is an exciting time to be building ships in Canada.
