From Colin's Desk

I’m delighted to welcome you to the first edition of On Watch for 2022. This is the first one that we are producing entirely in-house, and it is very exciting for our team to be working on everything from the content to the advertising packages that we can offer our subscribers and members. As we roll out our first few editions, we would really encourage you to send us your comments and suggestions so that we can continue to tailor the newsletter to suit your needs as best we can. Our new advertising rates are now available here and please contact support@cmisa.ca to discuss how we can help you effectively reach out to our industry and provide optimal promotional opportunities for your company.

I attended DEFSEC Atlantic last fall and was pleased to provide some thoughts on our marine sector in Canada and the importance of ensuring that there are Canadian solutions for Canadian vessels. You can see the interview here. It was a great opportunity for me to reflect on the changes that I see in our sector from the perspective of our Association that champions and advocates for the entire marine ‘build/support/service’ industry across Canada. I invite you, if you have not had the opportunity to do so yet, to join CMISA as a member and to enjoy our attractive member benefits while supporting our outreach efforts.

Note that we will be resuming our popular Member Spotlights in upcoming editions of On Watch, which provides members original content based on interviews to showcase the teams, innovations, and successes of our companies. We have had very positive feedback on the fact that we have conducted these Member Spotlight interviews with leading women in the sector, to highlight the important changes and opportunities that are being offered to a more diverse workforce. We want to continue to provide our members a voice to showcase the good work they are doing. Finally, as always, please take note of our new Job Board and a) take advantage of it if your company has an opening and b) send links to friends and family so that we can attract new people into our sector. We all need the help!

Stay safe and I hope to see you soon,

President and CEO

Government of Canada Announces new Parliamentary Secretaries, Deputy Ministers and Mandate Letters

In early December the Government of Canada announced the new Parliamentary Secretaries, and in early January changes at the highest ranks of the civil service were announced, with changes to note in the Departments of National Defence, Public Services and Procurement Canada, and Innovation, Science and Economic Development especially. New mandate letters for the Ministers were also announced, including for the Minister of National Defencethe Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, the Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Developmentthe Minister of Public Services and Procurementand the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. These mandate letters provide valuable information on the priorities that the Government has set out, some of the challenges that must be overcome, and the directions that each Minister will follow. It is well worth an analysis of the relevant mandate letters to help best position the companies in our sector.
